Xbox 360 Down 18% in 2007, PS3 Sells 1.2 Million, Wii Still Sold Out

Posted by Kyle on Thursday, January 10th

Despite what Microsoft has repeatedly called "the greatest holiday lineup in videogame history" (their words, not ours) with the likes of Game of the Year contenders BioShock, The Orange Box, Halo 3 and Call of Duty 4, the Xbox 360 struggled in 2007 to outpace PS3. While it managed to do just that, shipments declined year-over-year. The Xbox 360 shipped 7.3 million in 2007, down 18 percent from 8.9 million in 2006, shortly after launching in November 2005.

On the other side of the coin, Sony's PS3 appears to be on the rebound. According to preliminary numbers from Sony's PR department in Foster City, the PS3 sold (not shipped) 1.3 million units between November 23, 2007 and December 31, 2007. This of course includes the key post-Thanksgiving shopping days of Black Friday and Christmas Eve. Regardless, worldwide totals are estimated to be in the range of 5-6 million for PS3 in 2007.

While exact numbers for Wii in 2007 will not be known until NPD reports in mid-January 2008 the December monthly sales, Nintendo estimates nearly as many Wiis will be sold in the console's first year and three months (17.5 million) as Microsoft has shipped Xbox 360 in its first two years. To give you an idea of how much demand there is, I called four GameStops, two Game Crazys, a Circuit City, two Wal-Marts, Toys R Us, Meijer and Target. All were sold out of Nintendo DS and Wii in South Bend, Indiana a full two weeks after the Christmas holiday.
