Marvel Nemesis: Rise of the Imperfects

Developer: EA Canada Publisher: Electronic Arts
Release Date: October 11, 2005 Also On: None

Two factors went into my decision to break out this game and finish playing it enough to review it. One, I've been reviewing virtually nothing but DVDs for a couple months, and I sort of feel like I've left my first love. Two, this is the weekend before finals, and I needed something to do to relax for a while before I have to start studying. Anyway, Marvel Nemesis: Rise of the Imperfects was the result of EA buying the rights to put the Marvel superheroes into fighting games, rights which were previously owned by Capcom. Was the resultant DS game worth playing? Read on to find out.

Graphically, there is little positive that can be said about these graphics. Granted, they look okay, but they are not overly impressive by DS standards at the time of this game's release. As if that isn't bad enough though, there are graphical glitches in this game. Sometimes sections of the environment will just disappear, and sometimes characters can get stuck in the environments and not move. If these were cutting-edge graphics, maybe such things would be forgivable, but given the graphics in this game, such things are much harder to forgive.

In terms of sound, the music in this game is done reasonably well, and is probably the high point of the game. Unfortunately, this music is complemented by a set of sound effects which are repetitive and often annoying. If it weren't for the music, I'd recommend playing this game with the sound turned off. There is no voice acting in this game, which, granted, was typical of third-party DS games at the time of this game's release, and still is for the most part.

In terms of gameplay, this is supposed to be a 3D fighting game. It has reasonably laid out environments, has a decent although small cast of characters, and has the bare minimum of modes necessary to be a fighting game. The game has eighteen characters, most of whom will need to be unlocked by playing through the arcade mode. Each character has three adventures: a short one, a medium one, and a long one, so the game can last a while. In addition, there are three skill levels that you can play at. The game also includes a single-battle mode where you can choose your character and a computer opponent and a multiplayer mode that can be played through DS wireless connection. However, to play multiplayer each player will need his own system and copy of the game.

Many of the characters have access to their unique abilities, but, for all intents and purposes, this game is a button masher. Particularly against the computer, it's just a matter of approaching the opponent in such a way as to not get hit by their projectiles and using your punches and kicks to knock them back into a corner and then wail on them. There are exceptions, especially in the case of the slower characters who seem to have a harder time doing this, but for the most part that's all you have to do.

So what are we left with? Basically, all of the projectile attacks are fairly easy to dodge by sidestepping, so using them is usually not going to get you very far, so battles are a matter of trapping your opponent, as I said. Once trapped, it isn't overly easy to escape, so one good trapping can decide the battle. This being said, in multiplayer battles, going near the walls is a very bad idea. But, who wants to play a fighting game like this when there's better available? I've not, as of the time of this writing, had the chance to play Shrek Superslam, but I have played Guilty Gear: Dust Strikers, and it leaves this game in the dust in terms of quality. So, if you're desperate for a fighting game for the DS, I'd go with Guilty Gear or wait until a really good fighting games gets released on the system.
