Atari Anniversary Collection

Developer: Digital Eclipse Publisher: Atari
Release Date: June 29, 2001 Also On: DC & PS

Even though there was no true anniversary in 2001 for the Atari, Infogrames (which recently was renamed Atari), decided to release an Atari compilation of the greatest Atari hits. Now that the Dreamcast and PlayStation are both dead video game systems, this is a value-priced trip down memory lane. The 12 included games include: Asteroids, Asteroids Deluxe, Battlezone, Centipede, Crystal Castles, Gravitar, Millipede, Missile Command, Pong, Super Breakout, Tempest, and Warlords.

The entire package benefits from the Dreamcast’s analog stick, along with four controller ports, which make it better than the PlayStation version. The visuals look exactly like their arcade counterparts.

The archives make this title stand out from other Atari compilations. Included are promotional merchandise, flyers for the arcade games, and background information. Most compilations in recent memory have done this, giving a background in video game history to the gamer. Along with the stuff in the game itself, the instruction manual gives information about each game’s history.

While Atari Anniversary Edition doesn’t include anything that can’t be found anywhere else, it is a solid, fun package that Dreamcast and PlayStation gamers alike can enjoy with family and friends.
