Sonic Adventure

Developer: Sega Publisher: Sega
Release Date: September 09, 1999 Also On: GCN

The better of the two ‘Sonic Adventure’ games was the original, Sonic Adventure. Not only was it fast paced, but it boasted vast worlds with interactive AI. The characters are very good looking and detailed. Of course the world is fully 3D since it was made for the Dreamcast, which has nearly as much power as the PS2. Unfortunately there is a slight lag due to the speed of the game, especially in Sonic levels.

The sound could have been done better, but come on, we all love Sonic music! Of course it is nothing more than Sonic remixes, with a lot of guitar this time around. The voice acting is rather disappointing along with how the mouth and words are off.

The thing that really counts is how the game plays. You can play as six different unique characters which include Sonic, Knuckles, Tails, Amy, Big, & E-102 ‘Y’, along with a bonus character. The storyline is original for each character, all of which are very simple and sometimes frustratingly easy. Many of the ‘adventure’ levels are tedious, annoying, and boring. E-102 ‘Y’ & Sonic are more focused on action, while Amy & Knuckles are more based on ‘adventure’. E-102’s objective is to catch a frog, while Sonic’s is to collect pieces of the ‘Master Emerald’, before the evil Dr. Robotnik gets them. A huge down point to Sonic Adventure is the length of each character, some of which you could easily beat in an hour. Another bad aspect of the game is how clunky the controls are, even though you do get familiar with them pretty quickly.

I must say that how do they call it an ‘adventure’, when you run around talking to an orb, which will tell you what to do? I mean, the game is fun and all, but it gets annoy at how simple and repetitive things get. Sometimes things are so incredibly easy, the task becomes challenging and long, because you just don’t know what to do. To its credit Sega made a great attempt at making Sonic Adventure as open ended as possible.
