The blue hedgehog has returned to the Sega Dreamcast in his second adventure, Sonic Adventure 2. Unlike the first one, SA2 is an extremely fast-paced game with much more action than adventure. At the time of release, Sonic Adventure 2 marked the 10 year anniversary of our favorite blue hedgehog. In those 10 years Sega went through many changes and has since stopped production of the Dreamcast and left the hardware business to find new opportunities in the ‘software-only’ industry. Sonic Adventure 2 has already been ported to a system we would never imagine the hedgehog would travel to in a million years, the Nintendo GameCube. None the less, this was one of the best Dreamcast games of all time, but fell short of expectations.
Sonic Adventure was much different from Sonic Adventure 2 in a way, because it was so large and open. It was almost annoying most of the time, because you would get lost and not know where to go. In Sonic Adventure 2 you will never find this as a problem, because everything is straightforward. You go from one level to the next without any in-between. Another difference is that you either choose to play the Hero or Dark mode; you don’t choose your character like in Sonic Adventure.
When it comes down to graphics, Sonic Adventure 2 is a nice improvement over Sonic Adventure. All of the textures are clear along with nice detail and color. The mouth movement is still off, but better than Sonic Adventure’s. The levels are designed very nicely and thought out. There are plenty ups, downs, twists, and turns for you Sonic buffs. The water affects look great and the ripples are a nice touch. The game runs exceptionally smooth and there is minimal slowdown.
The music isn’t ‘classic Sonic’, but it gets the job done amazingly well. The main problem is the terrible voice acting, which could have been done better by a bum living on the street. The only exception to this is Sonic and Shadow, but they are still phenomenally bad.
Like in Sonic Adventure, Sonic Adventure 2 is plagued with a terrible camera control system, which will get you killed more than once. It is hard to bring a 2D classic into a 3D masterpiece, but it can be done. Unfortunately, like in Mario games the camera is a fatality of the 3D transformation.
Like I said earlier, you can choose as either Hero or Dark mode. If you choose Hero you will play as Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles. You play as Shadow, Robotnik, and Rouge in Dark mode. Each will take an average gamer between 4 and 8 hours to beat. Both Hero & Dark are about 30 levels altogether and make for a great game filled with action, excitement, and adventure.
