Donkey Kong 64

Developer: Rare Publisher: Nintendo
Release Date: November 22, 1999 Also On: None

The graphics in Donkey Kong 64 were truly stunning, with great detail, for their time. The environments were rich, yet slightly blocky. Even with this, Donkey Kong 64 had way too much funky lighting and to me it seemed like some kind of 70's disco party. This was the late 90's that we lived in Rare, not the days of groovy dance moves.

The controls were, well, terrible, in the sense that there was little to do. They were not only simplistic, but there really weren't many actions. The A button would have Donkey Kong jump, B to swipe, run and B to kick, and A+Z for pound. Really the only other thing you could do was use your one weapon and use the c-pad for the camera. Sure, Mario 64 isn't much better in this respect, but everything else about it made up for whatever shortcomings it had with controls and camera.

Well, another bad aspect of this game is the story. It is stupid and dull. Rescuing your friends (in Mario's case, a Princess) gets very old and makes a game boring and uncreative. The main concept of this game is to save your friends, collect blueprints and bananas, and kill enemies. This is obviously Rare's classic old fetchquest "adventure" game.

Even though this game lacks in nearly all fields, it does have one mildly cool opening, Monkey Rap. This is the introduction to Donkey Kong 64 and one of the few parts of the game that is seemingly inventive.

After you play Donkey Kong 64 for a while, it gets very repetitive and boring. How fun can collecting nuts be? There is really no replay value, many glitches, such as going through walls, trees, etc., confusing level designs, and it's just a plain old rip off of other classics like Mario 64. This Rare title is a huge disappointment and a disgrace to the Donkey Kong license. This is the perfect example of why Nintendo letting Rare go was justified.
