Perfect Dark

Developer: Rare Publisher: Nintendo
Release Date: May 22, 2000 Also On: None

Perfect Dark is Rare's unofficial sequel to GoldenEye 007, one of the best games ever created. Even though PD is inspired by GE in style and feel, it is apparent that Rare wanted to create another title that warrants a purchase of the N64 by itself.

In PD, you play as Joanna Dark, a special agent for a government agency on a near-future Earth. Your agency has become allies with a group of aliens, while at roughly the same time, an evil corporation has aligned itself with an equally evil race of aliens, placing them at odds with your alien friends.

Not at all surprising is the fact that PD's basic structure is that of GE. The first-person shooter levels are split into about two dozen mission-based levels, each of which you must complete objectives before you exit the stage. Missions vary from escorting an ally to your ship to downloading files from a computer. Like in GE, each level can be played in three levels of difficulty, each toughening up your enemies considerably and adding objectives.

The most impressive upgrades from GoldenEye are artificial intelligence. Your foes attempt working with one another, duck around corners, or wait for you to come out before they shoot you; in GoldenEye, enemies would chase you all over the level and wouldn't use very good tactics to draw you into the line of fire. In GoldenEye, you were overwhelmed with large numbers of stupid enemies, instead of facing small numbers of intelligent enemies, like in Perfect Dark.

Besides predictable changes, such as the addition of more weapons and items, improved graphics, and sound, PD also has a large amount of replay value, which was a huge advantage for GoldenEye also. Rare enhanced mutli-player by allowing for co-op play throughout all of the games levels. In regular multi-player modes, you can select dozens of different types of computer controlled enemies to play against, such as the 'Peace Sim', who runs around collecting weapons, 'Perfect Sim' who is unbelievably accurate, etc. Multi-player modes include death match, capture the briefcase, and king of the hill.

If you are a GoldenEye fanatic, like myself, Perfect Dark is a joyful experience. Aside from a few minor downturns, such as blurry textures and frame-rate slowdown, Perfect Dark is one of the best looking games on the N64, and most fun to boot. While Perfect Dark won't go down in history as eclipsing GoldenEye, it will clearly go down as a worthy adversary.
