Adventure games have always found a unique place in my heart. They always have at least a decent storyline, require very little CPU power compared to other genres, and they always seem to be the closest thing to real playable movies. Nibiru: Age of Secrets is the latest game by DreamCatcher, a company who I oh-so adore for their adventure games (they also create a good FPS called Painkiller, but that's about it).
Nibiru: Age of Secrets is the story of a young archeology student by the name of Martin Holan. A bizarre World War II tunnel is discovered in Bohemia. Events lead to events, and dark secrets of the Nazis (as if any of their secrets weren't dark?), murder, and the disappearance of the Mayan civilization. There were many non-playable characters, but there were too many characters that were barely fleshed out. The story isn't half bad. It has some real highs, and some lows, but sadly, the lows outnumber the highs.
The gameplay is top-notch. It's hard to determine the actual length of adventure games, but it's an easy 20+ hours for the average gamer. I finished it within seven, mainly because I had my friend (who beat the game) help me out. The game doesn't have that many puzzles, and mainly focuses on getting keys to get into rooms to get clues. Any newbie to the genre will be welcomed with open arms, and a seasoned vet will feel right at home.
The graphics are outstanding. Over 80 pre-rendered environments, my eyes were amazed. The audio is also top-notch. The music really fit the mood, so like always, DreamCatcher succeeds in this category.
I wouldn't dare say that this is DreamCatcher's best work of the year, because actually, they made an amazing adventure game called Still Life (GF365 reviewed it months ago). While Nibiru has almost everything that Still Life had, it simply doesn't have as good of a storyline. Adventure gamers, check out Still Life if you haven't, and check this out if you can get it at a cheap price and have nothing to do. People who are new to this genre, this is definitely not a bad game to start with.
